Ellis Island opens in Upper New York Bay.
Three ships landed on its first day of operation and delivered seven hundred immigrants. During its first year, nearly half a million more immigrants were processed at Ellis Island, with official reviewing up to 5,000 per day during peak times.
More than 12 million people passed through Ellis Island inspection station over the next sixty years.
